Semrush replaced our entire SEO tool stack. We consolidated KWFinder, Screaming Frog, Moz, and a handful of Chrome extensions into one platform — and saved about $300/month in the process. After 12 months of daily use, it’s the single tool we’d recommend if you could only pick one for SEO.

Keyword Research — Where Semrush Shines Brightest
Semrush’s keyword database has 25+ billion keywords across 120+ countries. That number sounds like marketing fluff until you compare it. We searched for the same 100 niche keywords across Semrush, Ahrefs, and Mangools:

For mainstream keywords, all three tools work fine. For long-tail, niche, and non-English keywords, Semrush’s database is noticeably deeper.
The Keyword Magic Tool is our favorite feature. Enter a seed keyword like “AI writing tools,” and it generates thousands of variations organized by topic clusters. We’ve discovered dozens of article ideas we never would have found manually — low-competition long-tail keywords that turned into some of our highest-traffic pages.
Pro tip: Sort by “Personal Difficulty” (PD%) instead of “Keyword Difficulty” (KD%). PD adjusts for your site’s authority, so you see keywords you can actually rank for, not just keywords that look easy on paper.
Site Audit — The Feature That Pays for Itself
Semrush’s Site Audit crawls your entire website and identifies technical SEO issues. Broken links, slow pages, missing meta descriptions, duplicate content, redirect chains, orphan pages — it catches everything.
We ran our first audit and found 147 issues. Most were minor (missing alt text on images), but three were critical: a redirect loop on our highest-traffic page, duplicate canonical tags on 12 pages, and an entire section of the site blocked by a rogue robots.txt rule. Fixing these three issues increased our organic traffic by 23% over the next 60 days.

Beginner tip: Run your first audit, sort by “Errors” (not “Warnings” or “Notices”), and fix those first. Errors are actively hurting you. Warnings are suboptimal. Notices are nice-to-have.

Semrush added an AI Writing Assistant that generates SEO-optimized content directly in the platform. In our testing, the SEO optimization aspect is excellent — the tool knows exactly what Google wants to see. The writing quality is decent but not as good as Jasper or Claude. We use it for the SEO framework (what to write), then write the actual content ourselves or with Jasper.
What We Don’t Love
The price. $140/month is a lot, especially for small businesses. And the Pro plan limits you to 1 user, 5 projects, and 500 keywords for tracking. Want to add a team member? That’s $250/month for Guru. The pricing feels designed to push you to higher tiers.
Information overload. Semrush shows you so much data that it can be hard to know what matters. We’ve seen beginners spend hours analyzing metrics that have zero impact on their rankings. More dashboards ≠ better SEO.
Backlink data. Ahrefs still has a slightly larger and more frequently updated backlink index. If your primary strategy is link building, Ahrefs might be the better specialist tool.
